Jane Austen lived in a dramatically exciting period of English history. Although her six novels are more concerned with the manners of courtship, marriage and money than social change and political intrigue of the time, there is a background steeped in Regency atmosphere.

This DVD explores the society which Jane Austen was very happy to be part of, looking beyond her novels to her sharp witty correspondence with her sister Cassandra, giving us Jane’s personal impression of life at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

The growth of Bath and Brighton are examined together with the architecture of the time. An overview is taken of the developments in the fields of medicine, religion, politics, paining and literature. Moreover, the program visits the places and discovers the people who may not have appear in Jane Austen’s novels, but are fundamental to our understanding of her work and the revered place which her novels hold in the world of literature.
