As the turn of the century approached, railways of the Netherlands were in a state of transition. Older types of locomotives such as the 1100s, 1200s and 1300s were fast disappearing to be replaced by the ultramodern DD-IRM, SM90 and DM90 multiple unit trains. The elderly Blue Angel and diesel ‘dog-nose’ units were also on borrowed time.

The TGV, in the form of the Thalys, now joined Paris and Amsterdam and other EuroCity and EuroNacht trains ran to Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. These cross-border workings are shown in detail as are more mundane short distance international trains. International freight trains also play a large part in this program including the working of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn which crosses the border to Coevorden.

The Hoorn-Medemblik railway, Buurt Steam Museum and the Veteran Amsterdam Tram Club add an additional preservation perspective to make this program a true Dutch experience.
